About Pamposh Raina

Pamposh Raina leads the Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU) of the Trusted Information Alliance,  an industry body of fact-checkers and media houses in India. Her current work lies at the intersection of A.I. and misinformation. She is a Responsible AI fellow at the Stimson Center. She has also been a fellow at the Virginia Tech Institute for Leadership in Technology.  

She is an independent journalist based in New Delhi. She has written on policy, politics, technology, gender, and children’s rights for Foreign Policy Magazine, U.S. News & World Report, Vox, and The World Economic Forum, among other publications. 

She was a reporter with The New York Times as well as the deputy editor for India Ink, which was NYT’s first-ever country-specific blog. She has also been a special correspondent, South Asia, for AFP. 

She is part of the global cohort of trainers accredited by the Solutions Journalism Network. During the 2019 Indian parliamentary election, she led a research project commissioned by WhatsApp to analyse misinformation trends on the messaging platform. She also initiated a student-led project at UC Berkeley’s Human Rights Center that focused on studying disinformation on social media in the run-up to the 2019 Indian election. 

As a trainer she has held workshops for journalists in South Asia and Southeast Asia on addressing climate crisis misinformation through WAN-IFRA as well as the Earth Journalism Network. She has organized and hosted panels on mental health and well-being for journalists in India through the Meta Journalism Project. As a media consultant she led a project that documented the impact of climate change on small farming communities in rural India. 

She has a master’s degree in Sociology from The Delhi School of Economics. She was awarded a fellowship to pursue graduate studies in Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University. She has received a UNFPA sponsored journalism award for gender reporting in India.
